Courage is the quality shown by someone who decides to do something difficult or dangerous, even though they may be afraid.
At Shobukan Martial Arts, we believe that knowing the difference between right and wrong is not always enough. We try to teach our students that we should not only do what is right, but that we should have the courage to do the right thing.
Courage is also about trying new things, even if they scare us. Like most skills, we know that courage can be improved through regular practice in every Martial Arts class. We help our students become brave and courageous by teaching them to push through their limits and improve themselves every session.
We teach our students that being courageous requires knowledge and wisdom. It’s not about putting ourselves in harm’s way or making rash decisions in order to prove we are fearless and courageous. Through Martial Arts training, we become disciplined, and learn not to act on impulses. Values and morals are taught to exercise courage in a responsible manner.
Simply the first step of coming to Shobukan Martial Arts training takes courage. It can be quite daunting to begin a new endeavour like Martial Arts. Walking in and starting as a white belt is something that’s well outside most people’s comfort zone, so it’s already a display of great courage.
We remind our new students that every black belt at Shobukan Martial Arts started out as a white belt. They were all white belts who showed courage and never gave up. Our Martial Arts programs are designed to help students push, develop and progress at their own pace. As new students learn their first basic steps as white belts, we work hard with them to develop courage and the ability to confront challenges head-on.
Building up courage is very empowering and strengthens your ability to face your fears. This is definitely a skill set everyone needs to develop in order to be successful in life. Every student are always encouraged to improve their skills, learn new things and reach for goals they thought were well beyond their capabilities.
