Martial Arts Builds Integrity

It can be difficult for teaching children about the importance of honour and integrity. Every day we see politicians, public figures, sport stars and celebrities behaving dishonourably in the news. It’s critical to highlight to children why integrity matters. Martial arts classes will instill this attribute in them.

Integrity is central to everything we do at Shobukan Martial Arts. We teach all our students that there’s a right and a wrong way to do things. We provide incentives and rewards if they adhere to our rules.

What is Integrity?

Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Integrity means telling the truth even if the truth is ugly. People will hold us in higher regard if we have a strong character and conduct ourselves with honour and dignity.

Shobukan Martial Arts builds integrity, as we show children the value of honour and integrity in our training hall.

How Martial Arts Builds Integrity.

1. We talk about honesty and why it’s important. We provide kids with honest feedback and teach them how to accept constructive criticism. In this way, they actively learn how to be honest without being hurtful, and that’s a key element of integrity.

2. We discuss the importance of having good morals, such as clean fighting. When children spar in class, they must do so with integrity. They must abide by the rules. This simple but effective lesson emphasizes the importance of doing things right.

3. Another component of integrity is follow-through. In our classes, children learn the importance of keeping promises. They make a commitment to Martial Arts by following through with training.

Essentially, these three ingredients – honesty, morality, and follow-through – are the three pillars of integrity. Every time they come to training, your child will be learning these principles. Our instructors live by these rules, and our students learn by watching them.

When children learn integrity at an early age, it sets them up for success in life. They understand the importance of honesty, and they see the effect that behaving with integrity has on their relationships with people.

Learning about integrity will benefit in their school environment as well. Children who live with integrity won’t lie, cheat, or bully. They will be less likely to let peers pressure them into dangerous or unhealthy behaviours.

Furthermore, the belt system in Martial Arts can greatly aid the development of integrity. When students begin their training, the focus is often fixed on what rank they are, and what colour belt they are wearing. However, as your child progresses, they will eventually learn that rank is not as important as skills and knowledge.

Students will often turn down the chance to be promoted in rank if they realise they need to dedicate more time to practice before being worthy. This highlights their integrity by refusing the easy way and valuing what is actually important. A sense of integrity will help your child to learn to see themselves as they truly are, which is the foundation for developing confidence and a strong sense of self-worth. Integrity is a personality trait that will carry over into all other areas of life.
