Self-discipline is the ability to control one’s emotions, impulses, desires and behaviours. It is being able to resist the desire for instant gratification in favour of gaining the long-term satisfaction and fulfillment from achieving higher and more meaningful goals.

Discipline has many benefits. It will help build self-confidence, allow you to accomplish more and be more productive. You are able to maintain a higher tolerance for frustration, challenges and negative emotions. It allows you to obtain better health, better finances and a good work ethic. You are able to reach your most difficult goals more efficiently. And essentially, the more disciplined you are, the easier life becomes.

Many people know that learning some form of Martial Arts could prove beneficial in helping someone improve their physique, their strength, and the ability to defend themselves and stand up to bullying. However, what some may not realize is that it can also build their sense of discipline.

This skill is important for everyone but can be of supreme importance for children. It can do this in a number of ways.

Focus

Shobukan Martial Arts training requires a significant degree of focus. Successful participation demands serious concentration in order to be able to learn various skills and manoeuvres, which requires aligning the body and mind. It’s imperative that distractions don’t sway student’s attention.

Control

Those who are successful in Martial Arts understand the importance of maintaining strict control of their emotions and thoughts. Students can not be influenced by any negative emotions, as they can impact the mind and cause the body to react in contrary manners.

Goal Setting

In Shobukan Martial Arts a belt system determines the participant’s current skill level. Ascension up the belt ladder requires students to set realistic goals, identify what’s required to achieve that level and work towards that.

Commitment

Students will often encounter unexpected obstacles that might delay the achievement of a specific goal. In Shobukan Martial Arts participants are taught to stay committed to a task. Commitment means staying the course despite experiencing difficulties, knowing that eventually goals will be achieved.

Rules Must Be Followed

Students must follow rules that govern any class. Discipline is normally fostered when your child learns to follow rules even if they aren’t something he/she agrees with. They are taught to always say “Yes, sir” when instructors say something, and they won’t put up with students who are disrespectful and can’t follow rules.

Self-Confidence

Training in Martial Arts will likely improve your child’s physique and make  them stronger. Such attributes can build up a child’s self-confidence. However, the lessons learned might also boost their self-esteem. Students often gain the ability to solve problems, handle social issues like bullying and maintain control to avoid potentially detrimental circumstances.

Leading A Disciplined Lifestyle

Students can apply the lessons they have learned in the training hall to other areas of their lives. They might decide to follow a healthy diet, avoid potentially harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs, refrain from reckless behaviours and focus on important tasks like schoolwork and community involvement.
